Übermensch
A solo show of works on canvas

Opening Reception: Friday, July 5th, 2013, 6:30 – 9:30pm
Show Dates: July 5th through August 3rd

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 1AM is pleased to present, “Übermensch”, a solo show by Ales “BASK” Hostomsky that opens July 5th from 6:30-9:30pm. “Ubermensch” will showcase works depicting children painted as superheroes on found and weathered surfaces that exhibit an energetic urban art aesthetic. The term “Ubermensch”, coined by Friedrich Nietzsche, refers to a state of being super-human; a state which Nietzsche believed mankind should strive to obtain. Expect to see a mix of iconic comic book imagery and playful representations of children upon panels and box frames.

During his childhood, the idea of God as a form of salvation seemed like a foreign concept, but the thought of becoming a super-man seemed obtainable or, at least, something worth striving for. BASK’s highly textural works of child-like figures upon layered, urban backdrops with vibrant comic book iconography recall the fantastical imaginings of his youth.

Bask’s work has appeared in countless publications in both advertising and editorial capacities. He has been shown in the Florida International Museum as well as the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art, which also has his work in its permanent collection. In addition to doing work for Death Cab For Cutie, Primus, and RIDE Snowboards, he was recently commissioned for a series of canvases for the backdrop in Iron Man 3.

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Reckoning at 1am SF Gallery.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 1AM is pleased to present “Reckoning”, a group exhibition reflecting society’s obsession with catastrophe, both imagined and real. The collection includes original art by Leon Loucheur, Optimist, Robert Bowen, Pemex, Monty Guy and Chamber Made. Drawing from a wide array of disciplines and cultural influences, these six artists expose a darkening horizon, commenting on the ruinous, self-destructive capacity of human societies. The opening reception is on September 28th from 6:30-9:30pm and is on view through October 27th.

“Reckoning” will feature works that incorporate a variety of styles and techniques, blending highly rendered realism with abstract painting, collage, urban and graphic influences to build mood and dynamic into the narrative of the composition. With graffiti and street art backgrounds, these artists will surprise viewers with this newest collection of works aimed at deconstructing conventional realism and reassembling it with layers of context and meaning.

All of the participating artists have been actively showing in galleries around the Bay Area and abroad, bringing worldly impressions from Ireland, South Africa, Taiwan and more. Explore their imagination and experience their influences through dramatic images and compelling landscapes in the paintings displayed in “Reckoning”. For more information, visit www.1AMSF.com. THE TRUCK SHOW San Francisco – Feb 10th, 2012

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Endless Canvas will be publishing a limited run of zines specifically about Truck Graffiti to be sold at this event.

Opening Reception:Friday, February 10th, 2012 from 6:30-9:30pm

1AM, in collaboration with artists, Optimist and Plantrees, are proud to present “The Truck Show SF”. The exhibit pays homage to the modern box-style delivery truck as an icon of graffiti and also is a charity event to benefit Visual Element, the public arts component of Oakland’s EastSide Art Alliance. Optimist and Plantrees have put together a killer line-up of artists, including infamous Bay Area graffiti writers like Satyr, Jurne and Pemex that have agreed to donate 100% of their proceeds to Visual Element. The organizers of “The Truck Show SF” hope to show that the graffiti writer’s love and respect for the art form is a powerful tool to help fuel and positively influence the next generation by giving back to their community even in a time of financial struggle. The opening reception is on Friday, February 10th, 2012 from 6:30 to 9:30pm and will run through March 4th, 2012.

The modern box-style delivery truck lives in the inner cities all across America. For the modern day graffiti writer it is a contemporary relative to the subway cars of the 70’s and 80’s, which helped spark the explosion of graffiti. In a state of eminent relocation, they assemble a disjointed gallery of ceaseless unrest, a perfect canvas for any opportunistic graffiti artist. In an attempt to keep trucks looking new, many owners will opt to give a graffiti writer permission to assume control over these plots of valuable real estate in the urban landscape.

Visual Element is the only intensive “Urban Graffiti Arts” program in East Oakland serving high school youth. The class facilitates the production of walls through their engagement with local property owners and the community. Students are trained to be responsible artists by learning a variety of visual arts skills including mural production, digital photography and graphic design. Visual Element creates a sustainable cycle and public art projects, which send the message that productive and self-sufficient youth can contribute positive change to their neighborhoods.

The organizers of “The Truck Show SF” are excited to partner with Visual Element. We both believe that murals educate, motivate to action, and inspire more creations of beauty. With a wide price range of artwork for sale, everyone interested will be able to take home a piece of graffiti history and support an important cause.
