MEMORIAL MURAL for Victims of Police Brutality – Oakland, CA

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

This week the Memorial Mural for those murdered by police in the Bay Area was restored after being disrespected.

As we all know, memorials are sacred and should be defended by everyone out of respect to the dead, their families and the greater movement against racial prejudice, trans-phobia and police brutality. This transcends graffiti politics and involves everyone.

Having the opportunity to display a political mural is very rare. The city, the police, and vigilantes are constantly trying to remove these murals.

If you are new to the Bay Area, please familiarize yourself with local history.

JR Valrey and Holly Works Face Years of Jail Time Over Oscar Grant Rebellions

Last Two of the Oakland 100 Headed to Trial In January 2009, over 150 people were arrested because of demonstrations over the police killing of Oscar Grant III. Over a year later two arrestees are being tried on bogus felony charges. JR Valrey, of Block Report Radio and the SF Bay View, is being brought up on a charge of felony arson and is facing a sentence of three years in prison. Holly Works is being brought up on a charge of felony assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and is facing a sentence of six years.

JR Valrey and Holly Works, the last two of the Oakland 100 — those arrested during the rebellions that followed the police murder of Oscar Grant last year — must raise legal defense funds for their imminent trials. JR’s trial starts Monday, February 22nd, and Holly’s starts the following Monday, March 1st. Both trials will be held at the René C. Davidson Alameda County Superior Courthouse in Oakland. Supporters are calling out to all who are able to attend the trials. Each trial is expected to last a few days.

RIP Oscar Grant Stencil Graffiti.

SAN FRANCISCO(AP) – The decision to move Johannes Mehserle’s trial to Los Angeles County is a setback for the former transit officer charged with killing an unarmed man on New Year’s Day.

Jurors throughout California are typically sympathetic to police, and the former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer could’ve expected a leg up before the start of trial in most any courtroom in the state’s 58 counties.

But legal analysts say Los Angeles is atypical and a bad draw for Mehserle.

The former officer will have to overcome the lingering specters of the Rodney King beating, the O.J. Simpson acquittal because of police behavior and other high-profile verdicts that expose many residents’ deep-rooted skepticism of law enforcement.

Mehserle is charged with fatally shooting 22-year-old Oscar Grant at an Oakland BART station. His attorney had argued for a change of venue because of what he described as excessive media coverage and racial tensions.
