PEELED: Hill Hudson Solo Show – Portland, OR – Feb 7th, 2012

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

hillflyerback-2

FIFTY24PDX Gallery and Upper Playground are proud to present Peeled: a show featuring the dark and detailed work of Portland artist Hill Hudson.

Bringing the cross hatch back one line at a time, Hill Hudson has been professionally throwing ink at paper for years as a Portland Oregon dwelling hipster. He is an illustrator backed by an epic overdose of graphic skateboarding, street art and comic book culture. Enthusiastically capturing very realistic yet stylized and controlled imagery, he’s breaking through the walls of a detailed, old-timey, quill and ink approach, to the popular wit of the new school zombie-loving era we live in. Hill has shown his work from galleries to coffee shops, Juxtapoz.com and zines littering the floors of nerdy kids rooms everywhere.

An opening reception for Peeled will be held First Thursday, February 7th 2013, from 6:00-10:00 PM. The show runs through March 30th 2013.

STYLE WARS Screening at Pacific Film Archive – Nov 3rd, 2012

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Starts at 8:15 p.m (Buy Tickets)

Location:
2575 Bancroft Way
Between College and Telegraph

One of the first films to document the emerging hip-hop culture, Style Wars journeys into the New York subway system’s vast gallery of graffiti art to present a unique portrait of the artist as an angry young man, rebellious, street-smart and strangely eloquent. We meet the writers, as they are called—Skeme, Seen, Iz, Kase, Cap, Crazy Legs, Frosty Freeze, et al—who risk jail to “get their names up,” as well as peripheral figures from cops to former Mayor Koch who try to analyze the work they can’t comprehend. A lively parallel is drawn between break-dancers, rappers, and train-yard artists.

Produced by Henry Chalfant. Photographed by Burleigh Wartes. Edited by Victor Kanefsky and Sam Pollard. (69 mins, Color, DigiBeta from 16mm, From Public Art Films)

RECKONING – A Group Show About Catastrophe – 9/28/2012

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Reckoning at 1am SF Gallery.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 1AM is pleased to present “Reckoning”, a group exhibition reflecting society’s obsession with catastrophe, both imagined and real. The collection includes original art by Leon Loucheur, Optimist, Robert Bowen, Pemex, Monty Guy and Chamber Made. Drawing from a wide array of disciplines and cultural influences, these six artists expose a darkening horizon, commenting on the ruinous, self-destructive capacity of human societies. The opening reception is on September 28th from 6:30-9:30pm and is on view through October 27th.

“Reckoning” will feature works that incorporate a variety of styles and techniques, blending highly rendered realism with abstract painting, collage, urban and graphic influences to build mood and dynamic into the narrative of the composition. With graffiti and street art backgrounds, these artists will surprise viewers with this newest collection of works aimed at deconstructing conventional realism and reassembling it with layers of context and meaning.

All of the participating artists have been actively showing in galleries around the Bay Area and abroad, bringing worldly impressions from Ireland, South Africa, Taiwan and more. Explore their imagination and experience their influences through dramatic images and compelling landscapes in the paintings displayed in “Reckoning”. For more information, visit www.1AMSF.com. “Vigilante Vigilante: The Battle for Expression” Official Trailer from max good on Vimeo.

http://www.vigilantefilm.com

A new breed of crime-fighter now stalks the urban landscape: the anti-graffiti vigilante.
These dedicated blight warriors stop at nothing to rid their neighborhoods and cities of street art,
stickers, tags, and posters.

Yet several of these vigilantes have become the very menace they set out to eliminate. In their relentless attempt to stamp out graffiti, they have turned to illegally and destructively painting other people’s property.

VIGILANTE VIGILANTE is the story of two filmmakers who set out to expose these mysterious characters and discover a battle of expression that stretches from the streets to academia.
